Moped Buyers Ask Questions

When buying a moped, make sure to ask the right questions to the seller, or else you might end up with something that is legally a motorcycle. This is important, because in most states, mopeds don't require a title, insurance or a license plate.

Most laws classify mopeds as:

- Having an engine that is 50cc or less, and produces 2 hp or less
- Cannot exceed 30 mph on level ground
- Doesn't require shifting gears

Mopeds should also be equipped with safety features such as a horn, headlight, front and rear breaks, a mirror, as well as front and rear lights.

To operate a motorcycle, it's necessary to have a state driver's license, as well as a motorcycle endorsement, insurance, vehicle title and a license plate. Motorcycle operators must also wear a helmet at all times, whereas there are exceptions in most states for moped riders.

In addition to this, there are other small motorcycles, that are intended for children like mini-choppers and pocket bikes that are not street legal. These types of vehicles do not have the necessary safety features for on-road usage.

Finally, when buying a moped from a private seller, it's important to get the sellers signature on the back of the moped's bill of sale (depending on the state you live in). There are states that still require a title for mopeds (same as with motorcycles) which would require the seller to sign over the title to the new owner.
