What is Considered a Moped?
Depends on who you ask. Moped enthusiasts consider mopeds to have pedals. If it doesn't have pedals, then it's a scooter or a motorcycle. Plain and simple.
If you look at the laws governing mopeds, they are typically defined as two or three wheeled vehicles that meet the following criteria:
1. Can reach speeds of no more than 30 mph on level ground
2. An engine size that is no bigger than 50 cc
3. Does not have a manual gearshift
4. Has a measure of 2.0 horsepower or less at the rear wheel brake
Many states classify the above as a moped and allow a 3-year registration for $15. It is best to check out your state laws though, as each state is different. Other vehicles who exceed the criteria mentioned above are considered motorcycles.
